About the BMP format

This tool writes a standard 24-bit uncompressed BMP (Windows bitmap, BITMAPINFOHEADER): a 14-byte file header plus a 40-byte DIB header, with pixels stored as bottom-up BGR rows padded to a 4-byte boundary. That format is accepted by almost every legacy application, embedded display and print pipeline.

Transparency and file size

BMP has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are composited onto a white background. Uncompressed BMP files are larger than JPG or PNG — that is the trade-off for maximum compatibility.
