Image to Pixel Art

Recolor any photo into retro pixel art using Game Boy, NES, PICO-8 or web-safe palettes, with optional Floyd–Steinberg dithering and a grid overlay. 100% Local

🎮 Upload an image to pixelate it

How to Use Image to Pixel Art

  1. Upload an image — click the drop box, drag a file in, or paste with Ctrl/⌘+V.
  2. Set the grid width — the number of pixels across. Height is computed automatically (capped at 200 rows).
  3. Choose a palette — Game Boy's four greens, the NES set, PICO-8's 16 colors, web-safe 216, or keep the original colors and just downsample.
  4. Optionally dither — Floyd–Steinberg error diffusion fakes gradients with limited colors. Toggle the grid to see each cell.
  5. Download PNG — the crisp, upscaled pixel art is saved with no smoothing.

Picking a palette

Game Boy gives the iconic green-tinted handheld look with only four shades. NES and PICO-8 offer 16 expressive colors each and suit sprites and logos. Web-safe keeps a broad 216-color gamut for photographs that still need a retro feel. Use None when you want pixelation but full color fidelity — handy for icons and logos.
