What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on recent iPhones and iPads. It stores the same picture with roughly half the size of JPG, but many websites, Windows apps and older devices cannot open it. Converting HEIC to JPG makes the photo usable almost everywhere.

Is the conversion lossless?
